US Latest News: The US Department of State recently announced the closure of its consulate general in Peshawar, citing ‘safety concerns for diplomatic personnel’. The move is now drawing significant attention from international media.
The Official Announcement
On Wednesday, the US Department of State put out an official statement. “The U.S. Department of State is announcing the phased closure of the U.S. Consulate General in Peshawar. Responsibility for diplomatic engagement with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will transfer to the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad. This decision reflects our commitment to the safety of our diplomatic personnel and efficient resource management”, the statement said.
It added that all consular responsibilities of the consulate in Peshawar, including diplomatic engagement with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, will be transferred to the Islamabad-based official US embassy. The statement also maintained that the consulates in Lahore and Karachi will remain active.
What Happened in Peshawar?
Speculation is now rife about what happened in Peshawar, a city located in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region. After the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei due to joint strikes by the US and Israel, protests flared up in multiple Pakistani cities, including Peshawar. It is worth noting that Peshawar is quite close to the Afghanistan border, with which Pakistan is currently involved in a war.
More recently, two ISIS-linked gunmen assassinated Sheikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Muhammad Idrees, a senior and well-respected cleric, as part of a targeted attack. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the killing, which happened in the Utmanzai area of Charsadda district, not too far from Peshawar.
Why the US Took This Step
According to the statement, which was issued on 6th May, safety concerns for diplomatic personnel are the primary reason for the closure of the Peshawar consulate, with resource management being another key factor. “This decision reflects our commitment to the safety of our diplomatic personnel and efficient resource management,” the statement said.
The US also opened up about its growing safety concerns for civilians in the city, stating “Terrorists may strike without warning. They target transportation hubs, hotels, markets, malls, military and security forces sites, airports, trains, schools, hospitals, places of worship, tourist spots, and government buildings.”
History of Security Challenges in Peshawar
Owing to its proximity to Afghanistan, Peshawar has been exposed to multiple security challenges over the years. The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a banned militant group, has conducted attacks in the city multiple times. While in 2025, the city witnessed over 60 terror related incidents.
Implications for US – Pakistan Relations
While the move is being considered a precautionary measure by many, it could dent the bilateral relations between the US and Pakistan. It indicates that while the US is very much committed to maintaining cordial relations with Pakistan, the safety of American diplomatic personnel is a top priority.
