Vote counting is underway after Washington State held its primary election on August 4. Since the state conducts elections entirely through mail-in ballots, officials are continuing to verify and count votes before confirming which two candidates in each race will advance to the November 3 general election.

Why Are Washington Primary Results Taking Time?

Washington follows an all-mail voting system, which means ballots continue to be received and processed after Election Day if they meet the deadline requirements. Initial results were released after polls closed on August 4, but county election offices will continue updating vote totals over the coming days before the results are officially certified.

How Does Washington’s Top-Two Primary System Work?

Washington uses a top-two primary system, where candidates from all political parties appear on the same ballot. Instead of party based primaries, the two candidates with the highest number of votes move on to the general election, even if both belong to the same political party.

Which Congressional Races Are Being Closely Watched?

One of the biggest contests is in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, where Democratic incumbent Marie Gluesenkamp Perez is seeking another term. She faces a challenge from progressive Democrat Brent Hennrich and Republican John Braun, who has received the endorsement of former US President Donald Trump. The district is considered one of the most competitive House races in the country.

Why Is The 4th Congressional District Important?

The 4th Congressional District has become one of the state’s most competitive races after Republican Congressman Dan Newhouse announced his retirement. Nearly a dozen candidates are contesting the open seat, including:

•    Democrat John Duresky
•    Republican Amanda McKinney
•    Republican Jerrod Sessler
•    Republican Matt Boehnke

The crowded field makes it one of the most closely watched races in Washington.

What’s Happening In The 9th Congressional District?

Long time Democratic Congressman Adam Smith is defending his seat against Kshama Sawant, the former Seattle City Council member known for her progressive and socialist politics. The contest is drawing attention because of the ideological differences between the two candidates.

What Other Elections Are Taking Place?

Besides congressional races, Washington voters are also deciding candidates for:

•    All 98 seats in the State House of Representatives.
•    24 seats in the State Senate.
•    Four seats on the Washington State Supreme Court.

These contests will help shape the state’s political balance ahead of the November election.

When Will More Results Be Available?

County election officials will continue updating vote totals daily as additional mail ballots are verified and counted. Final certified results will only be released after the counting and verification process is completed.
