The investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, 84, has expanded into a high-tech, multi-agency operation as authorities in Tucson work around the clock to trace leads. Nancy Guthrie, mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of Today, vanished on January 31 and was reported missing the next day.
Since then, federal and local investigators have combined traditional detective work with advanced digital tracking tools. Among the terms gaining attention online is “Signal Sniffer,” a phrase being widely discussed in connection with the case.
Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson-area home under unclear circumstances. Surveillance footage captured hours before her family realised she was missing shows a masked individual carrying a backpack near the property. That video has become central to the investigation.
Authorities responded quickly. Within 24 hours of releasing the footage, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department received more than 4,000 calls. The Federal Bureau of Investigation later confirmed it had collected over 13,000 tips since February 1. Local authorities reported processing at least 18,000 calls in total.
“Every tip is reviewed for credibility, relevance, and information that can be acted upon by law enforcement,” the FBI said in a public statement, adding that its tip-assessment process is operating around the clock. Investigators continue to sort through each lead to determine what may provide actionable evidence.
The term “Signal Sniffer” is not the official name of a publicly confirmed tool in the Guthrie case. Rather, it is a colloquial phrase circulating in online discussions to describe signal-detection and electronic tracking technologies used in modern investigations.
In missing-person or suspected abduction cases, law enforcement agencies often deploy radio-frequency (RF) detection systems, cell-site simulators, and other digital tracking tools. These systems help identify active mobile signals, reconstruct device movements, and trace communication activity in specific areas.
Authorities have not confirmed which exact technologies they are using in the Guthrie investigation. However, the presence of federal forensic teams suggests that digital tracing methods are operating alongside traditional investigative procedures.
Experts say signal-detection tools do not replace physical evidence. Instead, they help narrow down timelines and identify movement patterns of electronic devices near a scene.
The FBI described the individual seen in the porch footage as a man approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall with a medium build. He wore a ski mask, jacket, gloves and long pants, and carried a backpack. Officials have publicly identified the brand and model of the backpack in hopes that someone may recognise it.
Investigators recovered several gloves in the broader area, with the closest found about two miles from Guthrie’s home. Authorities submitted those items for laboratory testing.
Officials also confirmed that they collected DNA from Guthrie’s property that does not belong to her or individuals in close contact. An out-of-state laboratory is currently analyzing that DNA.
Handling tens of thousands of calls requires structured screening procedures. Analysts first review and categorise incoming tips before forwarding credible leads to investigative teams.
Former Tucson police chief Roberto Villaseñor explained how crucial public cooperation becomes once initial crime-scene processing concludes. “Once that’s done and exhausted, it’s hard to move forward without additional information coming in,” he said. Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation, noting that viral theories can distract from verified evidence.
Late Friday, officers blocked access to a neighbourhood roughly two miles from Guthrie’s residence. A convoy of sheriff’s and FBI vehicles, including forensic units, entered the area. Officials described it as part of the ongoing investigation but released no further operational details.
Authorities have not confirmed any ransom demand, financial motive, or link to broader criminal networks. Online speculation connecting the case to unrelated federal investigations has not been substantiated.
Despite the national attention due to Nancy Guthrie’s connection to her daughter, Savannah Guthrie, investigators have not suggested any motive related to her public profile. The search continues as agencies combine forensic science, digital tracking, and community input to find answers.
