What is the ‘Super Flu’ Subclade K Spreading Across the US & Europe?

The super flu driven by H3N2 subclade K is spreading rapidly across the US and Europe, fueling one of the toughest flu seasons in years.

Health Authorities across the United States and Europe are tracking a fast moving strain of influenza that has been widely labeled the ‘Super Flu’. Though the nickname might come off as sensational, experts say concern lies in how fast this variant is moving and the never before seen pressure it is putting on healthcare system during the current flu season.

What is the Super Flu

Super Flu refers to an influenza with a H3N2 Subclade K, a genetically drifted version of a long circulating seasonal flu virus. This strain has rapidly become dominant in several,l countries and contributing to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has described as the most severe flu season since 2017-18. In the UK, the flu wave began earlier than any season recorded since 2003-2004.

The Super Flu label is not a scientific term, it refers to a mutated form of the seasonal influenza A (H3N2) virus, officially known in genetic sequencing as subclade K (also called J.2.4.1). This version has drifted genetically from strains that dominated recent flu seasons.

What is Subclade K Influenza & How is it Different from Other Flu Strains?

Subclade K is part of the H3N2 family, a group historically associated with tougher flu seasons. What distinguishes this variant is not a higher severity per person, but rather its transmissibility. According to scientists, Small mutations make it better at dodging some pre-existing immunity and this leads to a higher number of cases. It is surge and not a particular severe symptom that presents a problem with this particular variant.

What are the Symptoms of Super Flu

  • Fever and Chills
  • Dry Cough
  • Sore Throat
  • Runny or Stuffy Nose
  • Body aches and muscle pain
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Headache
  • Sneezing
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing
  • Vomiting or Diarrhea

The Symptoms of Super Flu are generally similar to regular seasonal flu.

How is the ‘Super Flu’ Spreading Across Countries

The strain was first identified in Australia, where it prolonged the flu season into summer months between January and November 2025, Australia recorded more than 457,000 confirmed influenza cases, the highest since flu reporting began in 2001. The virus then spread quickly to the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and much of Europe.

In the US, New York alone reported over 71,000 flu cases in a single week in December, the highest weekly figure in more than 20 years. European health agencies and the NHS in the UK have also reported sharp rises in hospital admissions, particularly among older adults and people with underlying conditions.

How Effective Is the Flu Vaccine Against Subclade K?

While experts acknowledge that the current flu vaccine is not a perfect match for subclade K, data suggests it still offers meaningful protection against severe illness. Studies indicate vaccine effectiveness of around 70 to 75% in children & adolescents and 30 to 40% in adults, comparable to recent H3N2 seasons. Health officials stress that vaccination continues to reduce hospitalizations and serious complications, even when infections occur.

Why it’s spreading faster than usual

Subclade K has accumulated specific mutations in its haemagglutinin protein, which can help it spread more easily and partially evade immunity from past infections or vaccines developed earlier in the year. Health agencies in Europe, the US and other regions report that this variant now accounts for a large share of current flu cases.
