NYC Bomb Latest Update: The new bombing incident that could have killed the New York city mayor but failed has attracted the attention of the whole country and has created a new debate on the issue of online radicalization among the youth. According to the investigators, the case is about two teenagers who went to suburban Pennsylvania and were found to have planned to blow themselves up with improvised bomb bombs in a demonstration in Manhattan. The law enforcers are looking at the possibility of extremist propaganda.
The incident occurred in Manhattan, Upper East Side, which is close to the Gracie Mansion and political meetings as well as demonstrations are common in the area. Investigators claim that the situation was rather tense during one of the protest events when the suspects reportedly tried to carry out homemade explosive devices.
The suspects are said to have tossed improvised bombs in the demonstration area, according to the police. The explosives were also said to be produced by volatile chemical combinations which were occasionally linked to extremist attacks. The government was prompt to arrest the persons before matters got worse. Authorities termed the case as one that might have been associated with radical ideology.
It has been established that the main suspect is Ibrahim Kayumi, a 19 year old Pennsylvania resident where investigators also claim that he helped in the transporting of explosive materials in the planned attack. Law enforcement agencies claim to examine digital evidence to calculate potential motives.
Kayumi parents are immigrants who immigrated to the United States of America in 2004 and became naturalized citizens between 2004 and 2009. The family has property records which show the family owns a big house with a value of about $2.25 million which was a result of years of economic development since immigrating to the US.
The family house is found in Newtown, a neighbourhood in the Bucks County and the house is said to be on a total of 5,800 square feet consisting of several bedrooms and bathrooms. There have been no serious crimes reported in the neighbourhood and the residents characterize it as a family-oriented and quiet neighbourhood, so the allegations are especially unexpected by those who live in the area.
Authorities also detained Emir Balat who is an 18 year old who is of Turkish descent. In 2017 his parents were naturalized US citizens. Their Langhorne house has an estimated value of $653,000, as per the records.
Investigators indicate that there are digital pieces of evidence that indicate exposure to propaganda associated with the Islamic State. According to counterterrorism specialists, online forums have become an important avenue of recruiting extremists. Research indicates that over 80-90 percent of the current recruitment efforts by extremists incorporate the internet outreach.
Authorities are reviewing travel records and online activity tied to the suspects. It is reported that they might have visited foreign nations and even Istanbul is under investigation by the investigators as a part of the overall investigation. Authorities indicate that the investigation is still in progress and will be done on whether external networks had any effect on the suspects or not.
