As global technology leaders gather in New Delhi for the India AI Impact Summit 2026, one unexpected change has drawn public attention. Bill Gates will not attend the summit, and the Gates Foundation has confirmed that Ankur Vora will step in to represent the foundation at the high-profile event.

The update has sparked curiosity, especially as major names such as Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Mittal, Sam Altman, and Sundar Pichai take the stage. With Gates missing from the keynote lineup, many are asking: Who exactly is Ankur Vora?

Why Is Bill Gates Skipping the AI Impact Summit 2026?

The Gates Foundation has confirmed that Bill Gates will not deliver his scheduled keynote address in New Delhi. While the foundation has not officially explained the reason behind his absence, the development comes amid public discussion surrounding Gates’ name appearing in the Epstein Files.

Despite the change, the foundation has reiterated its continued engagement with India and its participation in summit discussions through senior leadership.

Who Is Ankur Vora?

Ankur Vora oversees the Gates Foundation’s work across Africa and India, two regions central to the organisation’s long-term mission. In his current role, he leads strategy and advises the foundation’s chair and CEO on how resources are allocated, which priorities are pursued, and how major portfolio decisions are shaped.

He works closely with governments, policymakers, and partner organisations to ensure that plans translate into real-world outcomes. His focus remains on improving lives in regions facing serious health and development challenges.

As per the Gates Foundation, “Ankur also helps guide the foundation’s long-term strategic direction, including advising senior leadership on priorities and planning toward its intended closure in 2045. He is known for a practical, results-oriented approach that values collaboration, shared accountability, and honest problem-solving.”

Ankur Vora’s Role at the Gates Foundation

Beyond regional oversight, Vora plays a key role in shaping the foundation’s future roadmap. He contributes to long-term planning and supports decisions that align with the foundation’s goals in healthcare, nutrition, education, and development.

His leadership style focuses on measurable impact rather than policy alone, ensuring that investments lead to tangible improvements on the ground.

Ankur Vora’s Education and Career Background

Before joining the Gates Foundation in 2013, Vora served as Director of Programs at the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, where he managed development investments across Africa and South Asia.

Earlier in his career, he worked as a principal at the Boston Consulting Group and also taught economics at the University of Chicago.

He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago and completed his graduation from BITS Pilani. In addition, he serves on the boards of Global Health Labs and the Gates Medical Research Institute.

Why Ankur Vora’s Presence Matters at the AI Summit

With Bill Gates absent, Ankur Vora’s appearance ensures that the Gates Foundation remains actively involved in conversations around artificial intelligence, public health, and development. His experience in policy, economics, and large-scale impact projects positions him as a strong voice at a summit focused on AI solutions for the Global South.

As discussions continue in New Delhi, Vora’s role highlights how institutional leadership often extends beyond high-profile founders, shaping outcomes through strategy, partnerships, and execution.
