Christian Sturdivant was arrested for plotting an ISIS attack, according to the report by law enforcement officials that the warning signs had been there for a while makes it more disturbing.

He worked at Burger King and lived with family members but beneath that surface, according to federal investigators Sturdivant was consuming and embracing the extremist propaganda online gradually building an identity around violence and martyrdom.

The New Year’s Eve attack plot evolved gradually over the course of about one year, as reported. Sturdivant reportedly talked about carrying out attacks in public places with the use of knives and hammers. Was Christian Sturdivant Known to Authorities?

Court records shows that Sturdivant originally came under FBI scrutiny early in 2022 after communicating online with an ISIS affiliate abroad. This is alleged to have encouraged him to launch an attack on a neighbouring house, which his grandfather intervened to stop. Following that incident, Sturdivant received psychiatric care and had his online activity restricted.

Social Media Account Inspired by ISIS Chief Leader

Investigators linked Sturdivant to an account using a name modeled after former ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi and the choice of name was not random. It reflected an effort to adopt the symbolism, authority and mythology of ISIS leadership, while positioning himself as an American follower ready to act.

What Did Christian Sturdivant Say Online?

Online posts cited in court filings show repeated praise for ISIS, calls for jihad and hostility toward religious groups and the LGBTQ community. In messages to undercover agents, Sturdivant allegedly spoke openly about carrying out violence and framed it as a religious duty. These posts ultimately became the evidence that triggered his arrest before anyone was harmed.
