The FBI raided the house of a reporter from the Washington Post newspaper, whose name is Hannah Natanson, seizing her phone, computer and Garmin watch on Wednesday. Who is Hannah Natanson?

Hannah Natanson is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who is most renowned for her work in the federal government, the United States Justice Department and in significant topics of interest in the broader society. She received the Pulitzer Prize in 2022 as a part of the team at the Washington Post, who received the Pulitzer Prize in the category of Public Service for the insurrection that occurred on January 6 and won a Peabody Award in 2024 as a producer of a podcast that focused on gun violence in schools and is colloquially known as the federal government whisperer because of her success in developing and sustain a strong network of sources.

The Investigation Into Leaked Documents

The operation was sparked by allegations made against Aurelio Perez-Lugones, a government contractor who holds top-secret clearance for allegedly removing classified documents to his residence. Court filings show Perez-Lugones printed out classified documents at his office, some of which were labeled “SECRET,” and attempted to remove them from secure areas. The FBI raid conducted at the home of Perez-Lugones attorney, Natanson was reportedly at the request of the Pentagon where prosecutors made it clear that Natanson was not a target in the investigation.

Trump Comments on FBI Search

Amid the search conducted by the FBI on Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson, Donald Trump said that the search was conducted on a government contractor, not the journalist. This was despite direct questioning on the matter by Ms. Natanson herself. He added that the investigation was linked to leaked classified materials.

No, FBI agents have searched the home of a Washington Post reporter named Hannah Natanson as part of an investigation into a government contractor who has allegedly broken the law by retaining classified documents. It has been reported that Natanson is not under investigation and is not believed to be the “Venezuela leaker.”

How the FBI Executed the Search Warrant on Natanson

The items seized from Natanson’s possession include his and associate’s laptops, a cell phone and a Garmin watch. According to news sources, there is a growing trend aimed at ensuring there are no leaks that might endanger the national security of the United States. Although Natanson’s reporting reveals activity by the federal government, there is also a growing trend to ensure freedoms within the journalistic community.

Implications for Press Freedom

The Committee to Protect Journalists and other media outlets have criticized the raid as highly unusual and aggressive. Normally, the rules of former Attorney General Eric Holder and subsequently Merrick Garland restricted the prosecution’s ability to prosecute or tape the belongings of journalists. In 2025, former Attorney General Pam Bondi unwound some of these rules to permit easier access by the government to the devices of the press.

What is the Official & Media Reactions

Natanson’s colleagues have pointed out the chilling effects such an inquiry might have on the national reporting networks in the federal government and how it might serve as a deterrent to would be whistleblowers. Indeed, Natanson herself illustrated how the fear and delicacy surrounding the situation have contributed to the “tension between national security and freedom of the press.”
