Markwayne Mullin, the Secretary of US Homeland Security, has once again raised a long-held debate surrounding Democrat Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. According to the official, an internal investigation revealed that the Congresswoman married her brother in a bid to assist his entrance into the US. Speaking to the conservative journalist Benny Johnson, Mullin was talking about Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, whom Omar reportedly married legally in Minnesota in 2009. “She married her brother to try to bring him into the United States,” Mullin commented on the Minnesota Congresswoman. “Now he lives in London.”
It should be noted that the allegations that Elmi is the Congresswoman’s brother have never been proven facts. Omar has vehemently denied the accusations. The previous reports and fact checks have also called it an unproven allegation. The latest event becomes relevant as Mullin calls the case under discussion an ongoing federal investigation. However, the Department of Homeland Security refuses to comment on the specifics of the inquiry.
Who Is Ilhan Omar? Key Facts About The Democratic Congresswoman
Ilhan Abdullahi Omar was born on October 4, 1982. She is an American politician who is currently serving as a member of the United States House of Representatives. She has been representing the congressional district of Minnesota’s 5th District since 2019 in the United States House of Representatives. This is an area that includes parts of Minneapolis and its first-ring suburbs. Prior to her service in the Congress, Omar served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. Ilhan Abdullahi Omar is the first Somali American to be elected to the US Congress and the first woman of color to be elected to Congress from Minnesota. She is also among the first two Muslim women alongside Rashida Tlaib to be elected to the US Congress.
What Is The Ilhan Omar Marriage Controversy?
The dispute focuses on Omar’s 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a marriage which is evident from public records that she indeed married him in Minnesota in 2009 before divorcing in 2017.
The claim regarding Elmi being Omar’s biological brother has been floating around in public discourse since a long time now. However, it came into prominence only after it got published on a Somali community website in 2016. Omar has always refuted the claims regarding her relationship with Elmi as her biological brother.
While earlier investigations have considered records related to her marriage and family background, none have offered convincing public evidence to substantiate that Elmi was indeed her biological brother. Both The Star Tribune and PolitiFact have reported that there was no concrete evidence for the same claim in the past.
What Did Markwayne Mullin Say About Ilhan Omar?
Mullin has recently added more fuel to the fire by stating that there is an ongoing internal investigation which indicates that Omar got married to her brother in order to help him enter the country.
“We’re investigating,” he said. Mullin has also stated that it would be possible for Omar to face certain repercussions with regard to her immigration status if the investigators find out that she was responsible for activities which could have made her ineligible to stay in the country.
“There’s no expiration to that,” he said. “If we can prove that, maybe you shouldn’t have been here in the first place, we’ll deport you.” Mullin has further gone on to clarify that the investigation is not being conducted for political purposes. Mullin said, “When we move forward, it’s not political.”
Is Ahmed Elmi Ilhan Omar’s Brother?
However, there is no officially recognized and documented finding which conclusively proves that Ahmed Elmi is a biological brother of Omar. While Omar has refuted the charge, those who support the allegations have offered varied pieces of information to substantiate the claims. However, fact-finding missions conducted by news organizations as well as various other investigations have not come up with a conclusive finding to prove that the individuals are siblings. This means that it would be erroneous for a journalist to say in a news article that Omar “married her brother.” The correct way to phrase it would be that Mullin claims to have done so and the issue is now under investigation.
What Has DHS Said About The Investigation?
While Mullin has made his comments public about the investigation, the Department of Homeland Security has refused to comment further. A DHS spokesman said, “As a policy matter, DHS does not discuss specific investigative techniques, current or future investigations or actions.” The spokesman added, “There is no one above the law, even members of Congress.” Thus, DHS has not confirmed anything regarding Mullin’s specific accusation nor taking any immigration action against Omar.
Could Ilhan Omar Be Deported?
According to Mullin, deportation may become an option in case an investigation finds out that Omar is illegally staying in or entered into the United States. On the other hand, there have been no reports of any deportation procedures being initiated against Omar due to the recent allegations. The fact that an investigation is being carried out does not necessarily mean that there is immigration fraud involved or that Omar should be deported.
What Are The Allegations About Omar’s Other Marriage?
Another aspect of the controversy relates to the timing of Omar’s marriages. In 2002, Omar married Ahmed Hirsi in a Muslim wedding. She married Ahmed Elmi in 2009. However, the marriage between Elmi and Omar was annulled in 2017. Later on, she got married to political consultant Tim Mynett in 2020. It is also rumored that Omar had not divorced from Hirsi at the time of marriage with Elmi. This is a question that formed another controversial issue of her life, but it cannot be used to prove the allegation that Elmi was her brother.
What Happens Next In The Ilhan Omar Case?
The most recent one is the alleged federal investigation cited by Mullin. There has been no official statement from the DHS on what exactly Mullin had talked about. Omar has consistently denied the allegation that Elmi is her brother.
