US President Donald Trump had earlier announced his death and said it gave Iranians their “greatest chance” to “take back” their country.”

Who was Ayatollah Ali Khamenei?

Ali Hosseini Khamenei (19 April 1939 – 28 February 2026) was an Iranian cleric and political leader. He served as the second Supreme Leader of Iran from 1989 until his assassination in 2026.

Before becoming Supreme Leader, he worked as President of Iran from 1981 to 1989. He led the country for 36 years. At the time of his death, he was the longest-serving head of state in the Middle East. He was also the longest-serving Iranian leader since Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Wife

Khamenei was married to Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh. She rarely appeared in public. Her father, Mohammad Esmaeil Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, was a respected businessman in Mashhad. Her brother, Hassan, earlier served as deputy director of Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Children

Khamenei and Mansoureh had six children — four sons and two daughters. Their sons are Mostafa, Mojtaba, Masoud, and Meysam. Their daughters are Boshra and Hoda.

Mostafa, the eldest son, is an Iranian cleric. He married a daughter of Iranian philosopher Azizollah Khoshvaght. He also fought in the Iran–Iraq War.

Masoud married the daughter of Iranian politician Mohsen Kharazi. He does not hold any official government or non-government position.

The family has several grandchildren. However, only one grandson’s name, Mohammad Bagher Khamenei, has been publicly revealed.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Brothers & Sisters

Khamenei had three brothers, including Mohammad Khamenei and Hadi Khamenei.

One of his four sisters, Badri Khamenei, left Iran and went into exile in the 1980s.

Reports suggest that some nephews and grandsons live abroad, including in Paris. His sons and daughters lived with him in Iran.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Books

Khamenei wrote and delivered works on Islamic thought and politics. His known publications include Palestine and An Outline of Islamic Thought in the Quran.
