The Houston Texans are one of the most beloved teams in the NFL. But, Janice McNair, the woman credited with bringing the American football league back to Houston has died at 89. She was one of the wealthiest female sports owners.

Janice McNair was born on September 30, 1936. She was 89 at the time of her death. 

Janice McNair: Cause of Death

Janice McNair’s family has confirmed that she died of natural causes peacefully, while surrounded by loved ones at her home in Houston. There was no foul play involved. 

Janice McNair: Net Worth

According to estimates, Janice Mcnair’s net worth was $7.3 billion. As owner of an 80% stake in NFL side Houston Texans, she was one of the wealthiest businesswomen in sports. 

Janice McNair: Husband

Janice McNair was married to businessman and philanthropist Robert C McNair, also known as Bob McNair. The couple met while attending Columbia college in South Carolina. She was married to him from 1957 until his death in November 2018. The couple established the Houston Texans in 1999. 

Janice McNair: Daughter

Janice McNair and her husband Bob McNair shared two daughters – Ruth McNair and Melissa McNair.

Janice McNair and her husband Bob McNair are survived by four children: Cal McNair, Robert Cary McNair Jr., Ruth McNair, and Melissa McNair. Cal McNair is the current chairman and CEO of the Houston Texans. 

Janice McNair Young

Janice McNair was born and raised in Myrtle Beach, South California. She attended private Columbia College, a private liberal arts college and met her future husband Bob McNair there. 

Janice McNair Stroke

In January 2022, Janice McNair suffered a stroke and her health garnered attention when eldest son, Cary McNair, filed a lawsuit seeking a temporary guardianship over his mother and her estate. Janice and her son Cal McNair fought against the lawsuit, which was eventually dropped in February 2024. 

Janice McNair Texans

Janice McNair and her husband Bob McNair established the Houston Texans in 1999. They brought an NFL franchise back to Houston after the city’s previous team, the Oilers, relocated to Tennessee. As a result, they are credited with bringing back the NFL to Houston. 

After her husband Bob’s death in November 2018, Janice McNair assumed principal ownership of the team and held the title of Senior Chair. She officially transferred the principal ownership role to her son, Cal McNair, in March 2024, who still remains CEO & chairman.
