The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Thursday that it had killed a Hamas operative in a targeted strike in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday. The military identified the individual as Muhammad Samir Muhammad Washah, alleging that he operated under the cover of being a journalist while posing a serious threat to Israeli forces.
According to the IDF, Washah was a key figure in Hamas’s rocket and weapons production headquarters and actively involved in planning attacks on Israeli troops. The military further claimed that throughout the conflict, he participated in the development of drones, rockets, and other weapons, and facilitated the transfer of arms across Gaza.

The IDF stated that Washah had used his purported affiliation with Al Jazeera as a cover for carrying out operations against Israeli forces and the State of Israel. “He contributed to Hamas’s force build-up and was directly involved in planning attacks, posing a concrete threat to our troops,” the military said in its statement.
Before the strike, the IDF said it took measures to minimize civilian harm, including using precision-guided munitions, conducting aerial surveillance, and gathering additional intelligence. The military emphasized that IDF forces under the Southern Command remain deployed in accordance with the ceasefire and will continue operations to neutralize any immediate threats on the ground.

Who was Muhammad Samir Muhammad Washah?
Muhammad Samir Muhammad Washah, also spelled Mohammed Washah, was a Palestinian journalist and correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on or around April 8, 2026. Following his death, conflicting narratives emerged regarding his role.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that Washah was a senior operative in Hamas’s rocket and weapons production headquarters, alleging that he used his journalistic position as a cover to advance terror operations, including the development of drones and missiles, and was actively planning attacks against Israeli forces.
In contrast, Al Jazeera and other media sources identified him solely as a journalist, while the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate condemned his killing as an “assassination.” Born in al-Bureij in 1986, Washah had been reporting from the Gaza Strip and was a recognized correspondent for the network.
