A Millville woman died on 14 February when her car swerved into the wrong lanes of Route 55 and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle, New Jersey State Police said. Maria Ortiz, 55, was driving north near milepost 25.7 when her Chevrolet Malibu crossed into the southbound carriageway and struck a BMW, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene, while two occupants of the other car were taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
The collision was the latest in a run of serious wrecks on the same stretch of highway, where drivers, officials and road-safety campaigners have long questioned why relatively routine mistakes so often turn fatal.

Ortiz’s crash mirrors one from December 2016, when a car driven by Lloyd Rudley crossed the grass median on Route 55 and struck a New Jersey State Police cruiser head-on, State Police said at the time. Both the driver and Trooper Frankie Williams, 31, died. In a separate incident, a Toyota ran off the road near milepost 39 and struck a tree, New Jersey State Police Detective Jeffrey Lebron said, injuring the driver. Each case follows the same shape: a vehicle leaves its lane at speed, with little standing between it and disaster.
What Makes This Section Of Highway So Unforgiving?
Route 55 carries two lanes of traffic each way at 65 mph through Millville, separated only by an open grass median rather than a solid barrier. That width gives drifting vehicles room to recover, but when a car does cross over, it meets oncoming traffic still travelling at full speed.
The interchange with Route 49, where vehicles must slow sharply from highway speed, adds a further point of conflict. The surrounding land, much of it undeveloped, offers few landmarks to help drivers judge their position, particularly at night.
Is New Jersey Reviewing Safety Along The Corridor?
New Jersey lawmakers have begun asking that question. Assemblyman Bill Moen, of the Assembly Transportation Committee, said the state has recorded “at least ten fatalities on Route 55 alone” over four years, and said his office is preparing to write to the New Jersey Department of Transportation about signage and lighting. NJDOT is separately preparing to rebuild the Route 49/55 interchange in Millville, where ageing bridges have been rated structurally deficient, according to project documents filed with the South Jersey Transportation Planning Organisation. A public meeting on the plan was scheduled for September.

Until any changes are made, State Police continue to investigate each crash individually, and officials have not confirmed a timeline for safety upgrades. Motorists are advised to keep to the speed limit and stay alert, particularly after dark.
