Pakistan has emerged as a mediator between the US and Iran amidst the ongoing war, as an effort to stop it. This mediation of Pakistan led to the two-week ceasefire, which officially began on April 08, 2026.
Iran’s Foreign Affairs Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi confirmed the ceasefire in the Middle East through a social media post. He started with expressing “gratitude and appreciation” for the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir ‘for their tireless efforts to end the war in the region.’
Furthermore, Donald Trump shared Araghchi’s note on Truth Social, suggesting Washington’s declaration of Islamabad’s role in the peace talks.
Pakistan Emerges as Mediator Between US and Iran
Soon after the postings on social media, the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif posted on ‘X’ and confirmed to be a part of the peace-talk and ceasefire between the US and Iran, including Lebanon and elsewhere, to be effective immediately.
What is the Role of Israel?
As per several reports, President Donald Trump spoke with the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu and Field Marshall of Pakistan Munir before finalising the two-week ceasefire.
However, in recent reports, Israel’s ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, has doubts about Pakistan being a mediator in the ceasefire talks. The Israeli envoy said Washington has its own reasons for using the services of Islamabad, but declared Tel Aviv’s objective is to achieve a situation without “Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure” in Southern Lebanon.
Why Pakistan Emerged as Mediator Between US and Iran?
Islamabad (Pakistan) has been pushing for peace in the Gulf since late March, and on March 29 it hosted the foreign ministers of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt for a discussion about peace in the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran.
As the war continues, Pakistan emerges as a mediator and conveys the US’s 15-point proposal to Iran. Later, pass on Iran’s response back to Washington.
Why Iran and the US Trust Pakistan (Islamabad)?
For Iran, it no longer trusts its Arab neighbours because of their deep ties with the US. Pakistan, however, shares a border with Iran, and the two countries have had a good diplomatic relationship. Additionally, Pakistan has no diplomatic ties with Israel due to the Palestine issue.
As for the US, its ties with Pakistan have improved over the last year. Islamabad has also joined Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, ensuring peace in Gaza.
