Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to travel to the United States in December 2026 to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit, according to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. Speaking during the IX USISPF Leadership Summit 2026 in Washington, Gor said the United States is looking forward to hosting the Indian Prime Minister again and confirmed that an invitation had already been extended. The expected visit comes at a time when India and the United States are making progress on a bilateral trade agreement while also expanding cooperation in defence, technology, investment, and Indo-Pacific security.
Marco Rubio Invited PM Modi to Visit the United States
Gor revealed that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio invited Prime Minister Modi during his recent visit to India. He said,”Secretary Marco Rubio invited PM Modi while visiting him… We love to have him back here. And I know he’s coming in December for the G20.” The planned trip is expected to coincide with the 2026 G20 Summit, which is scheduled for December 14-15 in Florida. If the visit takes place, it will provide another opportunity for the two countries to strengthen their strategic partnership.

India-US Interim Trade Agreement Moving Towards Conclusion
Gor also shared an update on negotiations for the proposed interim India-US trade agreement, saying discussions have entered the final stages. He explained that although substantial progress has been made, the agreement remains legally complex because it covers thousands of products traded between the two countries.
He said, “Ambassador Greer has the President’s full confidence, and so we are getting close to finalising that. But these things are complex legal things, and this is not one page. We have thousands of items between our two nations that we are working on. And so the fact that we’ve gone so far, that is a great sign for the relationship, and I am hopeful that we will be able to wrap this up sooner rather than later.” According to the envoy, both governments remain committed to completing the agreement at the earliest possible opportunity.
Trade and Investment Continue to Strengthen India-US Ties
Highlighting the growing economic partnership, Gor said businesses from both countries continue expanding their investments and commercial activities. He remarked, “I have been with the President for 10 years, so a large part of the conversation was like two friends catching up… but I also told him about my visits to India… I also spoke to him about the growing trade relations. On both sides, we see businesses coming here and going there every week, and it is a win-win situation for both.” The comments reflect the increasing pace of business cooperation between India and the United States.

Envoys Say Trump-Modi Relationship Has Regained Momentum
At the summit, USISPF Honorary Senior Advisor Al Mason said the relationship between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Modi has recovered after facing several challenges. He stated, “The historic Trump-Modi relationship, once the envy of the world, had entered a very challenging phase. Trade, domestic priorities, bureaucratic challenges, media noise.” Mason credited Ambassador Sergio Gor with helping rebuild communication between the two leaders. He said, “President Trump then introduced the exceptionally talented friend, Sergio Gor, into the storyline to reconnect the two old friends.”
Three Key Messages Trump Sent to PM Modi
Mason said Ambassador Gor personally conveyed three important messages from President Trump to Prime Minister Modi. According to him, “To Prime Minister Modi himself, he [Gor] conveyed 3 basic truths: President Trump respects India’s rise, President Trump admires Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, and President Trump wants a stronger India-US relationship.” The remarks highlighted Washington’s intention to further strengthen cooperation with India across multiple sectors.

When asked about the possibility of President Trump’s visit to India, Gor indicated that the trip is more likely to happen next year rather than during the US midterm election period. He said, “It’s not any time during the midterms. It has to be somewhere next year…We would love to make that happen sooner rather than later.” No official schedule has been announced for the proposed visit.
Quad Partners to Expand Indo-Pacific Cooperation
Gor also spoke about the upcoming Quadrilateral Security Dialogue meeting in the Philippines, saying member countries intend to deepen cooperation on maritime security and regional stability. He noted,”The Pacific security is something that is vitally important to all four nations…We want to make this a regular thing, not a one-off once or twice a year.” The statement reflects the Quad’s continued focus on strengthening collaboration across the Indo-Pacific region.
Trump Once Wanted to Call PM Modi at 6 AM
Sharing a lighter moment from his experience, Gor recalled an occasion when President Trump unexpectedly wanted to call Prime Minister Modi despite it being early morning in India. He said,”I was at an event with President Trump. And he says suddenly let’s call PM Modi. I told him that it was 6 AM in India. But Trump said Modi will be up. He is like me. He doesn’t sleep.” The anecdote was shared to illustrate the personal rapport between the two leaders.

The 2026 G20 Leaders’ Summit will take place in Florida on December 14-15, marking the first time the United States has hosted the summit since 2009.
