Chinese President Xi Jinping met Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Beijing on Monday as global diplomatic attempts to calm tensions between Iran and the United States continue to move slowly. According to Chinese state media, the meeting came shortly after Sharif held discussions with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who is considered China’s second most powerful leader. The visit has drawn international attention because Pakistan, being a mediator, has become an important bridge between Washington and Tehran during the ongoing crisis.
Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir Also Joins China Visit
Sharif is accompanied by Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir, who has been playing a vital role in backchannel diplomacy between Iran and the United States.
Pakistani television channels showed Munir taking part in meetings during his Beijing visit. However, the Chinese media did not immediately release any detailed information about what was discussed behind closed doors. Before the China trip, Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir travelled to Tehran with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi as part of ongoing peace negotiations.
Pakistan Emerging as a Major Mediator
Over the past few months, Pakistan has quietly stepped into the role of mediator between Iran and the US. Pakistan is currently the only country that has had good ties with both countries. Islamabad even hosted rare direct talks between officials from both countries earlier this year.
Although those discussions did not produce a long-term agreement between the two nations, Pakistan’s efforts have kept diplomatic channels open at a time when tensions remain dangerously high.
During his visit to China, Sharif called the current global situation “a critical moment” and praised Pakistan, which has been trying to play a key role in reducing conflict in the region. He also thanked China for supporting peace initiatives in the Middle East.
China Maintains Quiet Diplomatic Role
While Pakistan has been more publicly active, China has largely worked behind the scenes by coordinating calls and meetings with Gulf nations affected by the conflict. Beijing has repeatedly stated that it wants regional stability and has promised to work closely with Pakistan to support peace efforts. China has previously mentioned that it was ready to make “positive contributions” toward restoring stability in the Middle East as concerns over a wider regional conflict continue to grow.
Earlier Iran-US Talks Failed to Deliver a Breakthrough
Pakistan had hosted one of the few direct face-to-face peace talks between American and Iranian officials since the conflict escalated. During those negotiations, Asim Munir reportedly played a key diplomatic role and was seen welcoming both delegations. He was also photographed interacting warmly with US Vice President JD Vance.
However, the talks between the two countries eventually ended without a final agreement, and Iran continuously accused the United States of placing “excessive demands” on the table. Despite the setback, Pakistan and China now appear determined to keep diplomatic efforts alive as the world watches developments in the Middle East closely.
