Brownstein’s analysis cautioned that the cycle is nonetheless “anything but dull,” noting that internal Republican alliances frequently pit more moderate candidates against hard-right party loyalists in a state with no meaningful general-election check on the outcome.

The governor’s race is open after incumbent Republican Mark Gordon became ineligible to seek a third consecutive term, with Democrats not having won a statewide election in Wyoming since 2006. Five candidates have filed for the seat, including Republicans Megan Degenfelder of Casper, Eric Barlow of Gillette, Brent Bien of Cody and Curt Blake of Cody, alongside Democrat Kenneth Casner of Elk Mountain.
Wyoming’s open US Senate seat has drawn national attention of its own. Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis, who was elected in 2020, has declined to seek a second term, leaving the seat open for the first time in six years. Wyoming’s single US House seat is also on tomorrow’s ballot, alongside all five of the state’s other statewide elected offices, three of which, governor, secretary of state and superintendent of public instruction, are open contests with no incumbent seeking re-election, according to WyoFile’s election guide.

Because Wyoming operates a closed partisan primary system, only voters registered with a major party may cast ballots in that party’s contests, with the deadline for voters to change their registered party affiliation having passed on 13 May.
Ten of the Wyoming Senate’s 20 seats up for election this cycle will see their nominees determined tomorrow, with primary winners advancing to face voters again in November. With Republican primary victories effectively tantamount to election in most of the state’s districts, tomorrow’s results are expected to shape Wyoming’s political direction for years to come, regardless of how the formal general election unfolds in November.
