Sonipat border to IGI Airport in 20 minutes flat

A new six-lane Urban Extension Road 2 is likely to be thrown open this month. Travel time from Kundli border to the airport may come down to under 20 minutes.

NEW DELHI

Flyers from Haryana, Chandigarh and other northern states would soon be able to dash down to the IGI Airport in Delhi without getting stuck in jams around the National Capital’s periphery as a new six-lane Urban Extension Road 2 (UER 2) is almost set to be thrown open this month. By rough estimates, travel time from Kundli border on the Karnal highway in north Delhi to the airport is likely to come down to under 20 minutes.
The Rs-7,700 crore project, proposed for decongesting the Capital’s Dhaula Kuan area and other sections of both Outer and Inner Ring Road, is also likely to boost development and commercial activity in Haryana and West Delhi.
Once operational, UER 2 will provide an alternative route to the commuter and freight traffic between northern parts of Haryana —including districts of Ambala, Panipat, Karnal—to Delhi and Gurgaon. It will also serve the daily commuter traffic between West Delhi and Gurgaon via UER 2 and the Dwarka Expressway.
Highlighting the benefits of the new road, Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari recently said UER 2 is likely to divert vehicles away from Dhaula Kuan as it would offer a bypass to those coming from Chandigarh and Jaipur.
As per the Delhi Master Plan, the proposed width or right of way of UER 2 is 100 m. The road section design will include dual 3 lane carriageway, 3 lane wide service and 3 m wide central median. The road section also includes provision for pedestrian walkways & cycle tracks, the report said.
At certain stretches, a 20 m-wide green belt in also likely to be developed along the road. The alignment of UER 2 takes off from NH 1 near village Bankoli and terminates near the junction of Sector 24 in Dwarka – a total stretch of about 38.2 km.
According to the project report, the present alignment is proposed to connect NH 1 with NH 8 passing through Bawana Industrial Area, Rohini Sector 34, 35, 36, 37, Mundka Industrial Area, Najafgarh and Dwarka. The proposed alignment crosses the Delhi-Karnal Railway Line, NH 10 and Delhi-Rohtak Railway Line and merges with the contract package of UER 2 taken up with Dwarka Expressway at Sector 24 which further connects it with Shiv Murti at NH 8.

Sonipat connectivity
Sonipat is proposed to be connected with UER 2 by a spur road which will take off at the crossing of UER 2 with Bawana Industrial Area (Sector 3/4).
According to the DPR, the same spur will connect UER 2 with Barwasni By-pass – NH 252-A (near Sonipat). Length of the spur has been worked out to be 28.3 km. This road will assist in reducing the traffic load on NH-1, as this section will serve as an alternate connectivity between Delhi & Sonipat further connecting Sonipat with Gurgaon, the project report said.

Bahadurgarh link
For residents of South Delhi approaching Rohtaka and Bahadurgarh, UER 2 will offer a spur to Bahadurgarh by-pass. The proposed section will have a total length of about 7.6 km from UER 2 to Bahadurgarh By-pass (near village Balaur, NH-10).
