THE HAGUE: The Gandhi March, scheduled to be held at The Hague on Sunday (1 October), will conclude with an excerpt of an opera titled “Satyagraha” inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violent resistance. The March and the performance are a part of a “Follow the Mahatma” campaign launched by organisations, institutions and individuals advocating non-violence in the Netherlands, along with the Indian community and the Embassy of India. The excerpt will be performed by the Korzo Theatre and Kwekers in de Kunst at the Grote Kerk at The Hague on Sunday from 2pm. The opera “Satyagraha” has been composed by renowned American composer Philip Glass and forms a part of his “Portrait Trilogy” of operas about men who changed the world. The opera was commissioned by the City of Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 1980 and has been staged in many parts of the world. Described as a “mesmeric masterpiece” by Philip Glass, “Satyagraha” is known as an icon of contemporary opera which looks at Mahatma Gandhi’s early years in South Africa and his development of non-violent protests as a political tool. The text, sung by the principals and chorus, is entirely in Sanskrit and is adapted from the most important philosophical text of Hinduism, the Bhagavad Gita. The complete opera, in three acts, is to be performed with 60 choir singers, opera singers, Indian and contemporary dancers and musicians by the Korzo theatre as part of the Holland India festivals on 27- 29 October 2017. Philip Glass has personally permitted Korzo Theatre and Kwekers in de Kunst to adapt his original opera into a new version, including modern Indian dance. The performance will also form a part of the celebration of the year of the 80th birthday of Philip Glass.
