Seminar will discuss rights of the girl child

NewsSeminar will discuss rights of the girl child

The India Eye International Human Rights Observer (IHRO) will organise a seminar on 11 October to deliberate upon numerous issues concerning the girl child.

The event, named “Betiyaan”, will be held at the India Islamic Cultural Centre in the national capital. Governor of Goa Mridula Sinha will be the chief guest at the seminar.

India Eye IHRO managing director Rakesh Sharma said that the idea behind organising the seminar is to highlight the need to give equal rights to girls. “Female foeticide is a big problem in India, as a result of which the sex ratio has got disturbed. There has to be a change in the mindset of the people towards the girl child if we want to build an equitable society,” Sharma said.

Talking about female foeticide, he said it is not only criminal to the girl who would have been born, but also to society. He said a large number of women achievers would be honoured during the event and their success stories would be distributed among the participants. There will also be a panel discussion titled “Equal Access to Opportunity=Women Empowerment”.

Some of the women achievers who will be honoured during the event are Sadhvi Ritambhara (social worker), Supriya Sahu (DG, Doordarshan), Sangeeta Gupta (chief commissioner, Income Tax), S.I. Padmavati (cardiologist), Mridula Garg (author), Mrinal Pande (journalist), Kirti Kulhari (actor), Chhaya Ganguli (ghazal singer), Mithali Raj (captain of the Indian women’s cricket team), Meenakshi Arora (advocate) and Madhu Jain (textile conservationist).
