NEW DELHI: As per statistical reports released by the Delhi Traffic Police, the cases of drunk driving have raised significantly, as compared to the figures last year.

Delhi Traffic Police has reported a significant increase in prosecutions for driving under the influence of alcohol in the first half of 2024. As per the statistics released by the traffic police, between January 1 and June 30, 2024, it booked 12,468 individuals for drunk driving, marking almost 27% increase from the 9,837 prosecutions during the same period in 2023. This surge in cases highlights a growing concern that demands immediate attention from both, law enforcement agencies and the public.

In addition to tracking the overall increase in drunk driving incidents, the traffic police conducted a comprehensive analysis of the top 10 traffic circles with the highest number of challans issued in 2024. The analysis aimed to identify areas with the most prevalent traffic violations, facilitating targeted enforcement efforts to enhance road safety and compliance with traffic laws. The top ten circles include Rajouri Garden, Samaypur Badli, Rohini, Punjabi Bagh and Mehrauli. The total challans in these circles sums to approximately Rs 2,500.

Driving under the influence of alcohol poses a severe risk to all road users, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and other motorists. Alcohol impairs judgment and significantly increases the likelihood of accidents, potentially resulting in injuries or fatalities. The consequences of such reckless behaviour can be devastating and irreparable.

In response to the rise in the cases, the traffic police have intensified their crackdown on drunk driving. Increased checks and breathalyzer tests are being carried out to deter individuals from engaging in this hazardous behaviour. The authorities are committed to maintaining strict enforcement measures to curb this menace.

The traffic police also urged people to prioritise safety and act responsibly while driving. It is imperative for everyone to recognise the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and to refrain from doing so. Community involvement is crucial in combating the menace of drunken driving, and citizens are encouraged to report any instances of suspected drunk driving promptly.

Additionally, West District police also launched a comprehensive campaign to combat street crime and public nuisances. From January 1 to June 30, 2024, significant strides have been made in apprehending individuals involved in various criminal activities.

The police reported that over 1,000 individuals have been arrested for street crimes during this period, including 113 robbers, 168 snatchers, 62 burglars, and 676 thieves. This crackdown has led to the resolution of numerous cases and substantial recoveries of stolen property, including cash, mobile phones, two-wheelers, and jewellery.

Talking about robbery cases, the district t police made 113 arrests and solved 56 cases, recoveries included 1 car, 2 gold chains, 9 scooters, 10 motorcycles, and 25 mobile phones. A total of 168 arrests were made in cases of snatching, while 126 cases were resolved. More than 60 arrests were made in burglary cases. In cases of theft, more than 650 arrests were made while the recovery included 19 cars, 228 scooters, 109 motorcycles, 223 mobile phones, 27 water motors, 5 gold rings, 2 gold mangal sutras, 4 gas cylinders, and 3 e-rickshaws.

A total of 150 cases were registered under the Arms Act were registered, while 156 individuals were arrested. Under the Excise Act, more than 300 cases were registered while the recovery including 94,527 quarters of illicit liquor and 1,895 beer bottles, vehicles used in transportation were also seized. Under the Gambling Act, 164 cases were registered while 558 individuals were arrested. Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act, 36 cases were registered and more than 550 individuals were booked for public drinking.
