New Delhi: A tragic accident in Pune late Thursday has resulted in the death of a Swiggy delivery man and injuries to 3 others after an Audi car struck 2 motorcycles within minutes.
The driver, identified as Ayush Pradeep Tayal, a 34-year-old senior executive at a private firm, fled the scene but was later detained by police.
The incidents occurred between 1:30 am and 1:35 am at Tadi Gutta Chowk. Initially, the Audi collided with 3 people on an Activa, causing minor injuries. Shortly thereafter, it struck another motorcycle, severely injuring Rauf Akbar Sheikh, the delivery agent, as captured in CCTV footage.
Police managed to identify Tayal through this footage and subsequently seized the Audi involved in the collisions. “The accused has been sent for a medical examination to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident,” said Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil.
Tayal faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act.
This hit-and-run incident echoes previous cases in Pune, including a fatal accident on May 19 involving a drunk 17-year-old driving a Porsche, which resulted in the deaths of two IT professionals.
The case drew public outrage when the minor secured bail within just 15 hours, with the court imposing unusual conditions, such as writing a 300-word essay on road safety.
In another disturbing incident on July 16, an SUV driven by Saurabh, the son of a former corporator and NCP leader, injured two people while allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
Similarly, in Mumbai, a BMW struck a couple on a motorcycle in Worli, killing the woman after dragging her for 1.5 kilometers while her husband sustained injuries. The accused, Mihir Shah, the son of a former Shiv Sena leader, has been arrested and is currently in judicial custody.
These incidents highlight ongoing concerns about road safety and the implications of drunk driving in urban areas.
