Probe panel seeks statements from affected persons

New Delhi: The Commission of Inquiry investigating the police killing of Akshay Shinde, the accused in the Badlapur school sexual assault case, has called for statements from individuals who are “personally acquainted” with or affected by the incident.
This appeal was made by the Justice Dilip Bhosale Commission of Inquiry in a notification released on Saturday.
In August, 2 young girls, aged four and five, were reportedly sexually assaulted by Shinde, an attendant at a school in Badlapur, located in Thane district. Following his arrest, Shinde was shot dead by police during an alleged shoot-out on September 23.
In response to these events, the Maharashtra government established a single-member Commission of Inquiry, led by retired Chief Justice Dilip Bhosale of the Allahabad High Court. The Commission has been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident on the Mumbra bypass in Thane, where the fatal exchange of fire occurred. It will delve into the events that transpired leading up to and following Shinde’s death, exploring the actions of the police escort involved.
A critical aspect of this inquiry will be to determine if any individual, group, or organization bore direct or indirect responsibility for the incident. Additionally, the Commission will assess whether the police response was appropriate given the circumstances.
The panel is committed to conducting a thorough examination of all relevant details and occurrences associated with the case. It aims to propose both short-term and long-term strategies for the police to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Commission’s notification emphasizes, “All persons personally acquainted with, affected from or concerned with the matter under inquiry and such other incidents prior, during, and subsequent to the event which occurred on 23rd September 2024, should submit their statement to the Commission on affidavit.”
