The Indian automobile industry produced a total of 13,421,500 vehicles, including passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycles, in April-September 2016, as against 11,992,184 in April-September 2015, registering a growth of 11.92% over the same period last year.

Domestic Sales

The sales of passenger vehicles grew by 12.34% in April-September 2016 over the same period last year. Within the passenger vehicles category, passenger cars, utility vehicles and vans grew by 5.11%, 40.24% and 8.12% respectively during the April-September 2016 period over the same period last year.

The overall Commercial Vehicles segment registered a growth of 5.99% in the April-September 2016 period compared to the same period last year. Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) registered a “growth” at (-) 1.19% and Light Commercial Vehicles grew by 11.69% during the April-September 2016 over the same period last year.

Three-wheelers sales grew by 13.39% in the April-September 2016 over the same period last year. Passenger and Goods Carrier sales grew by 12.40% and 18.15% respectively in the April- September 2016 over April-September 2015.

Two-wheelers sales registered a growth at 17.47% during April-September 2016 over April-September 2015. Within the two-wheelers segment, scooters, motorcycles and mopeds grew by 26.94%, 12.65% and 26.32% respectively in the April-September 2016 over the same period last year.

Exports

In the April-September 2016 period, overall automobile exports declined by (-) 10.68%. While Passenger Vehicles and Commercial Vehicles exports registered a growth of 15.38% and 10.24%, exports of three wheelers and two wheelers declined by (-) 39.32% and (-) 12.45% respectively in April-September 2016 over the same period last year.
