Kashmir shivers as mercury dips to -6 degrees

NewsKashmir shivers as mercury dips to -6 degrees

Kashmir is reeling under a cold wave with the 40-day long severest period of winter, locally known as “Chillia Kalan” having started and most of the water-bodies have started freezing. Srinagar and other areas of Kashmir have been reeling under minus 6.5 degrees Centigrade temperature at night.

Night temperatures are going several degrees below the freezing point, making life for the residents of Kashmir more difficult as there are frequent power cuts apart from official curtailment by State PDD Department.

Though there is now a partially cloudy weather, the intense cold wave is likely to continue for a few more days in Kashmir and Ladakh, resulting in the freezing of water-bodies including a good portion of the Dal Lake. There are reports of water-bodies like Mansbal Lake, Wullar Lake etc., partially freezing because of the intense cold.
