Trendsetters and faux pas at this year’s Cannes Film Fest

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan dazzled everyone present with her beautiful, gold-hued Ali Younes beaded gown, and a beaded cape, at the red carpet of the 69th Cannes Film Festival. Though appreciated by the critics and fashionistas for her stunning eye make-up, the fashion police and some section of the Twitterati trolled the actor and lampooned her forwearing a lavender colour on her lips. There were also those who praised her for taking such a bold risk.

Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts surprised everyone when she entered barefoot at the 69th Cannes Film Festival. Donning a beautiful black Armani Prive dress that came with a pair of black heels, which were of course removed by the actress. According to the red carpet rules at Cannes, it’s compulsory for actresses to wear high heels, and Roberts chose to make was a bold statement against that by going barefoot.

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor made headlines when she attended the red carpet ceremony before the screening of Mal De Pierres at the Cannes Film festival. She was wearing a gown from the house of Ralph & Russo. Fans and critics took to Twitter to share comment on the dress. To some she looked stunning, while others mocked for her wearing a white gown that looked like a “rumali roti”.

Susan Sarandon

At the premiere of Woody Allen’s new film Café Society at the Cannes Film Festival, Susan Sarandon took a political stand, wearing black Jimmy Choo flats with a black, tailored Saint Laurent suit. Not only this, she also wore oversized orange sunglasses with a revealing gown on the second day of the festival. Sarandon also protested the festival’s “no-flats” rule with a tweet later.

Kristen Stewart

One of the major highlights of the Cannes Film Festival this year was Kristen Stewart’s new horror fashion film Personal Shopping, directed by Olivier Assayas. Unfortunately, it became talk of the town as soon as screening ended, and the audience booed the crew due for the film’s “miserable ending” and Stewart’s “unconvincing acting”. Stewart started trending on Twitter earlier this week, but some critics backed her by saying things like, “Stewart’s performance was magnetic and mesmerising”.
