AP, Telangana Emacet to stay

Telangana is all set to hold its EAMCET (Engineering, agriculture and medical common entrance test) on 15 May, while AP will be releasing ranks of its own EAMCET held on 29 April, thanks to the oral permission given on Friday by the Supreme Court which is hearing a batch of petitions filed by 18 states and some private medical colleges. A final ruling by the apex court is expected next week.

AP higher education minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao who spoke to The Sunday Guardian on phone from Vijayawada on Saturday confirmed that the State would declare EAMCET ranks as per schedule on 9 May. “This is a big relief to around one lakh students who appeared for the medical stream of the test,” he said.

Similarly, Telangana has announced that there won’t be any change in the EAMCET that is scheduled to be held on 15 May. “As many as 1.07 lakh students have registered for medical stream of the EAMCET,” said Telangana Higher education council chairman Prof T Papi Reddy. He said that SC had permitted states to conduct their own test for this year.

The fate of private medical colleges is still uncertain as the apex court had insisted that they cannot conduct separate tests on their own and that they should fill their seats based on the ranks of NEET. Legal counsels of AP and Telangana private medical colleges association, however expressed hope that their plea to conduct their own test would be heard by the SC on 9 May.
