The Congress in Jammu and Kashmir is fighting a battle of its own within in which its senior and experienced leaders have been side-lined, leading the state unit to go “almost defunct”. Party leaders say that it was the time for the grand old party to revive in the Union Territory. However, there are no consequential meetings and no agenda for the rank and file. Thus, all its leaders have become aimless and demotivated.
Party chief Vikar Rasool Wani is seen in frequent conflict with PCC working president Raman Bhalla and other senior leaders on petty issues.
A party functionary said, “An experienced politician like ex-state president Ghulam Ahmed Mir has also been completely side-lined.”
According to senior party functionaries, the central leadership should have removed the PCC chief Vikar Rasool Wani after he was involved in perpetrating many internal conflicts. A political analyst based in J&K said, “He has chosen many young people to do official politicking for the party. But some have left him and the party, and others have played their role in bringing the party down. Rahul Gandhi’s choice of leaders has disappointed him as well the party. Or it could be that he has very amateur advisors.”
Moreover, the top leadership in the state claims that the state chief (Wani) has friendly ties with Jitendra Singh Alwar, general secretary and Congress Working Committee member, who might have also been responsible for Wani’s “unceremonious rescue” (to suggest the leadership that Wani should continue at the top post) which has resulted in bringing down the political existence of the party in the state. Congressmen say Alwar is in frequent contact with Rahul Gandhi.
