BJP’s Rodmal Nagar has been winning this seat since 2014 by securing over 60% votes.
Though Congress finalised the candidature of its senior leader Digvijaya Singh from Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh Lok Sabha seat, yet he is seemingly not happy to contest from this seat.
A senior leader close to Madhya Pradesh’s former chief minister Digvijaya Singh said, “If electors cast their vote like they voted in recently held assembly elections, then Digvijaya would lose with a huge margin of about two lakh votes. However, the positive point in his favour is that he earlier remained MP from that constituency twice and has been in touch with the people of that constituency. As per the current situation he may lose from Rajgarh.
But because he is a veteran leader, he is capable of pulling the crowd in his favour and thus may ensure his victory. However, his body language indicates that he is not happy in any way. Because, going by the current mood, he knows that he could lose Rajgarh with a huge margin.”
However another senior leader said that the logic behind fielding top players including Digvijaya Singh is to get them working in the field. The leader added, “If Kamal Nath is responsible for party’s defeat in assembly elections, Digvijaya Singh is equally responsible.
Therefore, Rahul Gandhi wants all these big leaders to contest the elections and prove themselves, and if they are not able to prove themselves, they should sit back and let the youth or leaders who have worked hard for the party, take charge and perform.”
A Congress Working Committee (CWC) member who has closely watched the functioning of Rahul Gandhi said, “Rahul’s team has been telling him that all the big leaders have not done much when they were in certain posts. And that is the reason why Rahul Gandhi is indifferent towards big leaders in the party and that is also the reason why so many leaders have left the party.”
A total of eight assembly seats come under Rajgarh Lok Sabha constituency and in the recently held assembly elections, Congress party could win only two seats. Moreover, BJP’s Rodmal Nagar has been winning from this seat since 2014 by securing over 60% votes.
According to the party insiders, Digvijaya Singh had tapped the pulse of people earlier as he has been there and understood that the public was in no mood to vote him. Even the workers are not supporting him in the manner they should have been.
Therefore he had declared in January itself that he would not contest the general elections. However, other leaders are of the view that Singh has been visiting the constituency since four months and he has been preparing for the elections as he considers this Lok Sabha election to be his last.
