SAD faces internal and external challenges as Amritpal Singh plans a political venture at Maghi Mela.
Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is facing multiple challenges, including penance ordered by Sri Akal Takht for its chief, Sukhbir Singh Badal, and a physical attack on Badal by Narain Singh Chaura. Adding to its woes, Khalistani sympathiser and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail, has announced plans to form a new political outfit during the Maghi Mela in Muktsar on January 14. Notably, SAD has also scheduled its own conference on the same day, setting the stage for a potential political showdown.
Amritpal Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, revealed that the event at Maghi Mela will involve the formation of a committee to seek public suggestions on creation of a regional political party.
“We are organising a Panthic gathering, where Faridkot MP Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa will also be present. A five or seven-member committee will be formed to chart out the party’s structure,” he said.
Amritpal Singh, arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) in April 2023 after a month-long manhunt, continues to wield influence despite his incarceration. His electoral victory from the Khadoor Sahib constituency last year, further cemented his position as a significant player in Punjab’s politics.
SAD’s conference amid rising challenges
SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema confirmed that the party’s conference, to be attended by senior leaders including Sukhbir Singh Badal, will proceed as planned. This marks Sukhbir Badal’s first major public appearance following his religious penance ordered by the Akal Takht for alleged misconduct during SAD’s decade-long rule from 2007 to 2017.
The timing of Amritpal Singh’s announcement has raised concerns within SAD ranks, as his influence among Panthic voters could potentially undermine the party’s efforts to regain its footing after a series of setbacks.
Congress and AAP maintain a cautious approach
In contrast, the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have chosen not to hold political events on Maghi day. Congress state chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring emphasised adherence to the Sri Akal Takht’s directive against rallies on martyrdom days, stating that Congress leaders would pay tribute to the 40 Muktas at historic gurdwaras. AAP leaders plan a similar approach, focusing on paying obeisance at Muktsar’s Gurdwara Darbar Sahib.
Historical significance of Maghi Mela
Maghi Mela commemorates the martyrdom of 40 Muktas, Sikh soldiers who sacrificed their lives, fighting Mughal forces in 1705. Over the years, the event has become a platform for political gatherings and Panthic discussions.
As SAD attempts to navigate its internal challenges and political threats from emerging players like Amritpal Singh, the Maghi Mela promises to be a critical moment in shaping the future of Punjab’s political landscape.
