Shah accuses Congress, NC, PDP of misrule in J&K

NewsShah accuses Congress, NC, PDP of misrule in J&K

During his latest J&K visit, Union Home Minister Amit Shah lambasted the Congress, National Conference and PDP for corruption and misrule in Jammu and Kashmir from 1947 to 2014. Shah, like other BJP leaders, has maintained silence on the demand of all political parties of Jammu and Kashmir for early Assembly polls.
J&K Apni Party President Altaf Bukhari recently levelled serious allegations against bureaucrats working in Jammu and Kashmir and claimed that the general public is choked as they have no outlet for their grievances in the past five years. He said that the central government must intervene and let all the people of Jammu and Kashmir elect their own representatives for the Assembly. Incidentally, on 19 June, J&K completed five years without any elected government. It is in place to mention that on 19 June 2018 then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti resigned from the post after her alliance partner BJP decided to pull back support to her government.
From National Conference to PDP to Congress to J&K Apni Party to Democratic Azad party led by Ghulam Nabi Azad, all have called for restoration of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir. All these parties want elections without any further delay in Jammu and Kashmir so that democracy is restored.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has talked about development in Jammu and Kashmir and said that the previous governments led by National Conference to PDP to Congress were responsible for the killing of thousands of people. It seems from the preparations of the J&K administration that they will conduct Lok Sabha and local body elections, but not the Assembly elections. Recently, the government has taken a decision to order revision of electoral rolls for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and panchayats in Jammu and Kashmir, followed by delimitation of the segments. Both ULBs and panchayats complete their five-year term by the end of this year. A senior government official said that the final call for the ULBs and panchayat elections would be taken after the completion of Amarnath Yatra this year.
Recently, Special Summary Revision was carried out and final electoral rolls were published on 25 November last year. The numbers had gone up to 8.5 million when the Special Summary Revision was undertaken by the Election Commission this year and final rolls were published on 27 May 2023.
Reacting to the preparations and to the utterances of local BJP leaders, Omar Abdullah said: “Why should I wait for elections? Madamji (Andrabi) will be happy. She does not want elections to take place as her party will be wiped out. They won’t have an address here.”
“I know her very well. I am not saying anything because she is a lady and I respect that. But she should not talk rubbish. Parliament elections are going to be held. Let them hold Assembly elections as well. How is it that they can hold Parliament elections and ULB polls, but not Assembly elections?” Omar asked. As the BJP government is showing no indication that they are keen to hold Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir in the coming months of this year, it seems now farfetched for these local political parties to look for such a situation at least during the current year.
