BJP’s leadership shakeup and cabinet reshuffle are likely as national president election approaches.
NEW DELHI: The BJP has completed the election process for state presidents in several states, including Rajasthan. Once elections for state presidents are conducted in more than half of the states this month, the process of electing the national president is expected to begin. This makes the coming months crucial for both the central government and the party organisation. The new national president is likely to be appointed in March, after which the BJP will form a new team by April.
According to sources, some central ministers may be given responsibilities within the party. Once the organisational work is completed, a reshuffle in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet is almost certain, and discussions about it have already started. In May, Modi’s third term will complete one year, and during this time, he may introduce new faces into his cabinet.
At the beginning of his third term, Modi did not make major changes to his team, primarily because BJP did not secure a majority on its own. Instead, the NDA government was formed under Modi’s leadership with the support of allies. Most ministers from the second term were retained in the third term, and no significant changes were made in key ministries. However, it is now believed that the upcoming reshuffle could be significant, with the possibility of many ministers being removed.
Modi’s recent electoral victories in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Delhi have strengthened his position. The NDA has become more powerful under his leadership, and he is now expected to make necessary changes without hesitation. The formation of a new BJP team and changes in Modi’s cabinet could be major developments. Therefore, the BJP is focusing on every state during the organisational elections. States like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh will also see new state presidents.
In Rajasthan, Madan Rathore was re-elected unopposed as the state president, being the sole candidate to file a nomination. In states where state presidents were appointed less than a year ago, the same leaders were retained. However, in states where terms had ended, such as Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh, new presidents will be appointed. Once elections for state presidents are completed in more than half of the states, the national president election process will begin in the first week of March.
The election for the national president has been repeatedly postponed. It was initially scheduled for June last year but was delayed due to the general elections. Later, it was postponed again due to state elections, and further delays occurred because of incomplete elections in some states. Now, BJP’s entire focus is on electing the national president. While there were internal disagreements over organisational elections in the states, the central leadership’s instructions helped unify the party. In Rajasthan, BJP leaders showed complete unity during Rathore’s election.
The party has maintained a united front in Rajasthan, with the leadership of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and the involvement of former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. Raje’s active participation in the election process indicates that she is aligning with the high command’s decisions. There is speculation that she may be given an important role in Delhi.
After the election of the national president, significant changes are expected within the BJP’s organisational structure. Following this, Modi is likely to introduce changes in his team, which could impact various ministers and party
