Words of Jesus are Spirit and life

opinionWords of Jesus are Spirit and life

Maturing into Christ-likeness involves walking by the Spirit, “for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life” (2 Cor. 3:6). All through the history of the world, religious people have committed murder, and thought they were doing God a favour. This truth is well illustrated in the story of the woman caught in the act of adultery.

The men of the city brought her before Lord Jesus asking what they should do about her sin. They were seeking to corner Jesus and wanted Him to deny the law of Moses. But, Jesus turned the tables on them.

He knelt and wrote something on the ground. Jesus then planted the Word in their heart and mind, when he said, “Let the one who is without sin cast the first stone” (John 8). Instantly, the violent crowd was speechless.

Their condemnation of the woman yielded to the life-giving Words of Jesus, full of grace and truth. As expected, one by one they walked away because they saw the folly of their way.

If we want to walk in the Spirit, we must cultivate a listening heart. The Bible teaches: “Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts” (Heb. 3:15).

As we continue to listen and obey the Words of Jesus, our lives are transformed into His likeness. As He said, “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you —they are full of Spirit and life” (John 6:63).

Once we understand that God’s laws are for our good, we need not give up when we fail to keep the law, knowing that God’s grace is available to repentant hearts.

God’s helps us as He transforms us into the likeness of his Son. Experiencing God’s grace allows us to extend the same grace to others.
