We are accountable for God’s creations

Creation, the network of living organism that provides a viable context and “home” for community living, is an outcome of God’s generous, sovereign freedom. God created an ordered, reliable place of peaceableness and viability. The act of creation results in a place of fruitfulness, abundance, productivity, extravagance — all termed up in the word blessing.

Thus, in Genesis 1:28, God asserts, “God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth’.”

It is God’s will for the world that it should be fruitful, invested with power of fertility. God has authorised in the world the inscrutable force of generosity, so that the earth can sustain all its members, and has within itself the capacity for sustenance, nurture and regeneration. This capacity for generosity is no human monopoly; it is assured that every genus and species of creation can “bring forth” according to its kind. The evident wonder and inexplicable gift of blessing evokes worship of living God. The miracle of creation enacts God’s will for life. “The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims His handiwork” (Psalm 19:1).

All creation, including human creatures are looked after, cared for, sustained and protected by the generous guarantees that the Creator has embedded in the creation. The birth of a baby, the inscrutable gift of newness into the routineness of daily human life, in peasant hut and among the urban elite, is the most specific evidence of the wonder, generosity, and generativity of creation as intended by God. As stewards of God’s creation and not its owners, and we are accountable to God of how we take care of God’s creation!
