The British media seems to hold something against Sunak’s Indian origins.
The level of ridicule and character assassination faced by Rishi Sunak has reached a crescendo. Almost every day newspapers have headlines talking about how bad things are under Sunak. Some speculate that he was eminently going to be replaced. Replaced by whom though?
One national newspaper predicted a return of Boris Johnson. Boris Johnson, who has put the Conservative Party in such a dire state in the first place. The way he handled the Covid crisis, the way he has shown complete contempt for established norms of running a country… But the newspaper is obviously hell bent on removing Sunak even if it is by a discredited, failed leader. The two other names the media have put forward to replace Sunak are Penny Mordaunt and Kemi Badenoch. Both have pledged their loyalty to Sunak. Every other day we hear of plots to dethrone Sunak. A recent article in the Sunday Times claims that for Rishi Sunak the hardest part of his job was of not being there for his two daughters. This is a good example of how the media manipulates news. Sunak was talking about his domestic life and how difficult it was to be there for his daughters due to the pressures of work.
To the great disappointment of the cynically, manipulative media these plots come to nothing. The fact of the matter is that there is no credible leader to replace Sunak. Sunak has proved to be an astute politician who has handled the economy well and resolved the contentious issue of Northern Ireland Protocol. People have short memories. Back in September 2022, Liz Truss was elected leader by the Conservative Parliamentary Party. She lasted only 49 days. The shortest time as Prime Minister in the history of Parliament. Her emergency budget introduced by Chancellor Kwasi Kwateng saw the pound fall to its lowest ever level against the dollar. After PM Sunak replaced Liz Truss, he stabilised the economy and has brought inflation under control. He is trying very hard to stop the refugees coming by boats, but the unelected House of Lords is continuously blocking the legislation. The people of the country do want to stop the refugee migration and uncontrolled immigration, they want control over widespread crime, they want to see the end of the dystopian state of our towns and cities. Sunak is the leader who can provide the solutions this country needs.
In the latest attack on Sunak, the opinion polls have declared that the Conservative Party under Sunak will only get 98 seats in the next election. The credibility of these polls are suspect. The vast majority of people are yet to make up their minds regarding which way they will vote.
In its attempt to turn the people against Sunak the media is doing a great disservice to the country.
When Labour takes over what will it offer the country? Apart from Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, there is no one on the Labour front benches who looks competent enough to handle the economy, the refugee crisis and extremism that have engulfed the party. I have great respect for Keir. He is an honest, decent politician, but in some ways he is too much of a gentleman for the rough and tumble of politics.
Unfortunately, when a lie is repeated again and again, people accept it as truth. The people of the country have fallen for the lie and are turning against Sunak. Though the vast majority of the people of Britain are fair-minded, the media seems to hold something against Sunak’s Indian origins.
Fortunately, Sunak is a fighter who will not be bullied. He has proved that he can run the country and he can challenge vested interests. We must not let down an Indian origin Hindu Prime Minister by falling for media propaganda.
