CHRISTANITY: Love as image of God in humanity

Sacred TextsCHRISTANITY: Love as image of God in humanity

From the beginning, the Bible teaches us that we are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27), and this image is love. In the life of Jesus Christ, we see God’s perfect love, which calls us to show that same love in our lives.

Made for love. This idea is at the centre of Jesus’ teachings. When someone asked Him about the greatest commandment, Jesus answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind,” and “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39). This shows that we reflect God’s image through our love for God and others.Jesus Christ is the Perfect Image of God’s Love. The Bible describes Jesus as “the image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15). In His life and ministry, Jesus shows us what it means to be fully human, living in perfect love. Everything He said and did shows God’s love. One powerful example is in John 13:1-17, where Jesus washes His disciples’ feet. This act of humble service shows us that love is not about power but about serving others with humility. Jesus even washed the feet of Judas, who would betray Him. This shows that love is unconditional—it goes beyond those who love us and even reaches those who hurt us.

The sacrificial love of Christ on the cross: The greatest example of love is seen at the cross. In John 15:13, Jesus says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Jesus did not just talk about love; He showed it by giving His life for us. Romans 5:8 tells us, “But God demonstrates His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” We are called to love those who are like us and those who are different from us—across cultural, social, or religious lines. The Bible teaches, “No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us, and His love is made complete in us.” we are called to show this love in practical ways—through kindness, forgiveness, service, and compassion. As God’s image-bearers, let us accept the call to love, knowing that through love, we fulfil our purpose and reflect God’s glory in our humanity.
