CHRISTIANITY: Fruit of the Spirit: I

Sacred TextsCHRISTIANITY: Fruit of the Spirit: I

The Fruit of the Spirit lists nine good qualities every Christian should show if filled with the Holy Spirit. These qualities are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). In contrast, the works of the flesh are bad behaviours that cause harm and division. Let’s reflect on three fruits in this study and consider the other fruits in the following study.

Love is an action of selflessness and unconditional care for others. It’s a love that builds bridges, creates a supportive community, and reflects the love of Christ for humanity. This love is so powerful that it led Him to make the ultimate sacrifice on the Cross. It’s a love that shows itself through acts of kindness, forgiveness, and selflessness, and it’s a love that seeks the best for others, even at personal cost.

Joy is a deep and lasting happiness from knowing and trusting God. It’s not based on what happens to us but on our relationship with Him. Believers are encouraged to find joy even in tough times because facing challenges strengthens our faith (James 1:2-3). A joyful spirit, based on the hope and promises of God, can attract others to the faith (Romans 15:13).

Despite His sufferings, Jesus showed great joy because of His relationship with the Father and His mission. He taught His followers to find joy in God’s presence and in doing His will.

Peace is a calm and content heart, even in tough times. It comes from trusting that God is in control and has a plan for our lives. This peace keeps our hearts and minds calm in Christ Jesus, even during great trouble. Believers are called to be peacemakers, resolve conflicts, and promote reconciliation (Matthew 5:9). Jesus is called the “Prince of Peace.”

He calmed storms, healed conflicts, and promised His followers peace beyond understanding, rooted in trust and faith in God.

The Fruit of the Spirit should manifest in our interactions with others and guide how we live in our families, communities, and workplaces.
