Word and spirit amid chaos

Sacred TextsWord and spirit amid chaos

Joshua learnt from experience to accept each day he faces and find God. Life has not been easy for Joshua. He often wondered what lies beyond chaotic situations. How to find meaning and hope in all troubles? Is he to survive through chaotic times, or does it mean more than that, a time of new beginnings that, like the labour pains of childbirth. Joshua found the answer in the opening chapter of the Bible, where we see the living God who creates and chaos. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” (Genesis 1:1-4). We joyfully observe that the Word and Spirit together remove chaos and bring back order, harmony and the flourishing of life.

We must heed the advice God gave to Moses: “Fear not, stand still and see salvation of the Lord” (Exodus 14:13). And then later God tells Moses to act in faith: “Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water” (v.15). And the waters were divided and dry ground appeared for God’s people to pass through the roaring walls of waters on both sides of the river. God will bring about salvation for you as well. We believe in a God of resurrection.

Take courage. As Jesus was full of grace and truth so are His healing words which the Holy Spirit applies in our life like a healing balm. Are you wondering why as husband and wife you can’t just experience that elusive joy all the time? Watch your language, does it include truth and grace? Remember truth without grace is destructive and grace without truth is falsehood. Speak words which reflect the fruit of the Spirit! And see life giving transformation take place.
