Prime Minister Narendra Modi released Kaala Varisayil Bharathi Padaippugal, a comprehensive collection of the works of Tamil poet and freedom fighter Subramania Bharati, on his 143rd birth anniversary. The event took place in the national capital, and the collection was compiled by Seeni Viswanathan.
In his address, the Prime Minister paid tribute to Subramania Bharati, describing him as “a profound thinker dedicated to serving Maa Bharati.” Reflecting on Bharati’s legacy, PM Modi noted that despite the pandemic in 2020, the country commemorated the poet’s 100th death anniversary.
PM Modi praised Bharati’s forward-thinking vision, stating that the poet foresaw societal progress, advocating for youth and women empowerment. He also highlighted Bharati’s belief in science and innovation, citing an instance where Bharati envisioned a device to view events in Kashi while being in Kanchi — a reality made possible today by modern technology.
“Our culture regards words as more than just expressions; they carry deeper significance,” the Prime Minister remarked. “The words of our sages reflect their contemplation, experience, and spiritual practice.”
The event was attended by Union Ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, L Murugan, and other dignitaries.
Following the event, PM Modi expressed his sentiments on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “Honoured to release a compendium of Mahakavi Subramania Bharati’s works. His vision for a prosperous India and the empowerment of every individual continues to inspire generations.”
Subramania Bharati, known as the ‘Mahakavi Bharathiyar,’ is celebrated as the father of modern Tamil literature. His commitment to social justice and the cause of self-determination is reflected in his major works, including Kannan Pattu, Panchali Sapatham, Kuyil Pattu, Pudiya Russia, and Gnanaratham.
