Candidate selection underway in Chandigarh for LS elections

NewsCandidate selection underway in Chandigarh for LS elections

Congress has commissioned a survey aimed at understanding voters’ sentiments and concerns.

In Chandigarh, the political arena is buzzing with activity as preparations for the upcoming General elections kick into high gear. With the Congress taking the lead, all major parties are actively gearing up for the electoral battle ahead.
The Congress has thrown open its doors, inviting aspiring leaders to stake their claim for candidacy in the Lok Sabha elections. Interested individuals must submit their applications, accompanied by a ten thousand rupee demand draft, to the Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Office in Sector-35 before the February 10 deadline. These applications will undergo rigorous scrutiny by the Pradesh Congress Committee before being forwarded to the high command for final consideration and selection.

To gauge the pulse of the public, the Congress has commissioned a survey aimed at understanding voters’ sentiments and concerns. Conducted by a private agency, this survey seeks to gather opinions on the party’s performance and preferences regarding potential candidates. The findings will inform the party’s decision-making process, alongside inputs from party leaders.
Pawan Bansal emerges as a strong contender for the Congress, with the party actively considering his candidacy for the Lok Sabha elections. Despite discussions surrounding his candidacy in 2019, Bansal’s involvement in Chandigarh politics has been limited since his tenure as a Member of Parliament from Anandpur Sahib.

On the other side of the aisle, the BJP has also sprung into action, holding meetings to finalize their candidate for the Lok Sabha elections. With leaders like Vijay Rupani and Saudan Singh at the helm, the BJP is strategizing its approach and discussing potential alliances with parties like the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress.
The prospect of an external candidate entering the fray adds another layer of complexity to the electoral landscape, posing a challenge for incumbent Kirron Kher’s bid for a third term with the BJP. Local stalwarts including Sanjay Tandon, Arun Sood, Satya Pal Jain, Anup Gupta, and the newly-minted political aspirant Kanhaiya Mittal are all vying for attention.

However, the specter of infighting looms large among local candidates, threatening to derail the party’s prospects. If internal conflicts persist, the BJP may find itself considering external candidates once again. Additionally, educator Sandeep Sandhu is actively preparing to throw his hat into the ring for the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Chandigarh braces itself for a fiercely contested electoral battle, with candidate selection poised to shape the course of its future.
