The Rajya Sabha is scheduled to reconvene on Wednesday, November 27.

NEW DELHI: The Winter Session of Parliament began on Monday morning but was quickly disrupted, leading to the adjournment of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha for the day.

A joint session of Parliament, presided by the Speaker, also took place before separate sessions of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Tomorrow, November 26, the Parliament will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Constitution.

Before the session began, I.N.D.I Alliance leaders from both Houses met at the office of Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. During the meeting, the leaders planned a unified strategy to demand discussions on allegations against the Adani group.

In the Rajya Sabha, proceedings were disrupted as Opposition MPs demanded a discussion on bribery allegations involving the Gautam Adani group. Initially adjourned until 11:45 am, the session was later adjourned for the entire day due to the continued demands. The Rajya Sabha is scheduled to reconvene on Wednesday, November 27. Before adjourning, Union Minister Manohar Lal moved a motion for the election of a member to the advisory council of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), which was passed by voice vote. Another motion, proposed by Union Minister J.P. Nadda for electing a member to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, was also adopted by voice vote.

Similarly, Lok Sabha began its proceedings with Speaker Om Birla reading out obituary references before adjourning until 12 noon. A short while later, the House was adjourned for the day and will reconvene on Wednesday. The Winter Session, scheduled to conclude on December 20, spans a total of 25 days from its commencement.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media before the session, emphasizing on the global attention India is receiving. He urged Parliament to use its time constructively and conduct itself in a manner that bolsters India’s reputation on the world stage. He highlighted the need for healthy debates in Parliament and expressed concern over individuals attempting to disrupt proceedings for political gains. Taking a jab at the Opposition, he remarked, “Those rejected by the people in elections repeatedly—some as many as 80-90 times—often resort to creating chaos in Parliament instead of facilitating discussions. They fail to understand the aspirations of the people.” He also expressed hope that new members from all parties would contribute to meaningful discussions during the Winter Session.
