Devendra Fadnavis has major backing, including that of the RSS to become Chief Minister.
New Delhi: As the Mahayuti alliance is headed for government formation in Maharashtra, the suspense over who would be Chief Minister continues, with Devendra Fadnavis having major backing within the alliance to take that office. For now, the ruling bloc has appointed Eknath Shinde as caretaker Chief Minister, after he resigned from the post of Maharashtra CM onTuesday.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has thrown in its support behind Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to return as the Chief Minister. According to RSS members, Fadnavis was the face that attracted public support for the BJP.
“Fadnavis has been the leader of all the MLAs, and it was his presence that secured people’s backing for the BJP. This move will also strengthen the BJP-RSS alliance in Maharashtra,” an RSS functionary had told a reputed news agency.
The caretaker CM is a temporary post brought into existence when a sitting government’s tenure ends because of the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly, but before a new government is elected and sworn in. The caretaker CMs maintains government continuity. The caretaker CM’s role is restricted to day-to-day administrative duties, with no authority to make new policy decisions, introduce major changes, or enter into new agreements.
The purpose is to ensure the state’s administration functions smoothly without major interruptions or decisions until a new government is formed. In summary, the Chief Minister is an active, full-power role, whereas the caretaker Chief Minister is a limited, transitional role focused on maintaining basic government functions without policy changes.
