NewsDevendra Fadnavis Unanimously Chosen to Lead Maharashtra BJP, Set to Take Oath as Chief Minister

Former Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was unanimously elected as the Leader of the Maharashtra BJP Legislative Party on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. He is expected to take oath as the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra on December 5, 2024.

A legislature party meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was held at the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan to select its leader, who will assume the role of Chief Minister. During the meeting, the BJP core committee chose Devendra Fadnavis as their leader.

Chandrakant Patil and Sudhir Mungantiwar formally proposed Fadnavis as the party’s legislative leader. “I nominate Devendra Saritatai Gangadharrao Fadnavis as the leader of the party’s legislative wing,” they announced.

State BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule highlighted the historic nature of their electoral victory under Fadnavis’ leadership. “We have received a historic mandate for the Mahayuti alliance. We are committed to making Maharashtra the number one state, with support from Prime Minister Modi. Out of the 149 seats we contested, we won 132, a record number. Our allies secured 57 and 41 seats, respectively. Additionally, seven independent MLAs have pledged their support, bringing the Mahayuti alliance’s strength in the Assembly to 237 members,” Bawankule said.

On Tuesday, leaders from the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, part of the Mahayuti alliance, visited Mumbai’s Azad Maidan to inspect preparations for the Chief Minister’s oath-taking ceremony. The event, scheduled for December 5, will mark the start of the new government following the Mahayuti alliance’s landslide victory in the state assembly elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior NDA leaders, and several Chief Ministers are expected to attend the ceremony.
