NEW DELHI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, raised concerns regarding allegations that foreign entities, particularly those linked to billionaire George Soros’ network, played a role in influencing a key decision made by Assam Congress in 2014.
While addressing the media about reports connecting Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his British wife, Elizabeth Colbourn, to both the Pakistani government and George Soros’ Open Society, Sarma stated, “It is only a matter of time before the extent of foreign influence, spearheaded by George Soros’ network, in shaping a crucial decision of the Assam Congress in 2014 comes to light
The Chief Minister further emphasized that the couple must respond to serious allegations regarding their supposed connections with Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI, and their alleged involvement in taking young, impressionable individuals to the Pakistan High Commission for indoctrination and radicalization. Additionally, he highlighted concerns over Colbourn’s continued refusal to acquire Indian citizenship for the past 12 years, as well as links between certain family members and a conversion cartel. He also pointed to reports suggesting the receipt of foreign funds, including from George Soros, which he claimed were aimed at destabilizing the country. “These are serious issues that cannot be brushed aside,” Sarma asserted.
He further stated that, at some point, those involved would have to be held accountable. He warned against attempts to evade responsibility or divert attention elsewhere, insisting that the people of the country deserved clarity and truth on such a significant matter.
Earlier in the day, the Assam Chief Minister also took to X to express similar concerns, writing, “Pressing questions must be addressed regarding allegations of ISI ties, leading young individuals to the Pakistan Embassy for indoctrination and radicalization, and the refusal to obtain Indian citizenship for over a decade.”
He further noted, “Involvement in a conversion cartel, along with the alleged receipt of foreign funds, including those from George Soros, intended to disrupt national security, are serious concerns that warrant thorough scrutiny and cannot be disregarded.”
