NCW receives plea on lack of toilets for women lawyers in Nilgiris Court complex

The National Commission For Women urged the Madras High Court to Registrar for taking immediate cognizance of the lack of toilets for women lawyers at the Nilgiris Court Complex. Therefore, the commission has also asked the Registrar in order to communicate the steps which need to be taken within three days.
It has also been stated by the NCW court complex, which was being inaugurated in the year 2022, boasts of several amenities but the same lacks a designated toilet that the women lawyers can use.
However, the letter reads that the complainant has mentioned in their complaint that the new court complex was inaugurated in June, 2022, while the complex boasts of several amenities and facilities, it shockingly lacks a designated toilet that women lawyers can access and this oversight has left women lawyers in an uncomfortable and undignified position and the women lawyers have to struggle with the basic sanitation needs while performing their professional duties. Thus, the same being disheartening to learn that the women lawyers in Nilgiris have been demanding a toilet in the court complex for the past 25 years without any resolution.
It has also been stated by the NCW that providing such functional toilets is not only a matter of gender equality but the same is also essential for creating an inclusive work environment.
It has also been write by NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma wherein she urged in order to take immediate cognizance of this matter and intervene to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to address this pressing issue, while providing a separate and fully functional toilet facility for women lawyers is not only a matter of gender equality and dignity but also an essential step which is towards creating an inclusive and conducive environment for all legal professionals.
The plea was moved by the Women Lawyers Association of Nilgiris district this year in the month of April, wherein the grievances were raised regarding lack of toilet facilities, the Madras High Court had informed the Supreme Court that necessary steps have been taken in order to address the said issue.
The bench comprising of CJI DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha had given liberty to the Association for approaching the District Judge or the Registrar General of the High Court for redressal of any subsisting grievances.
