Would advise women to invest in jewellery: Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor is welcomed as the brand ambassador for the upscale diamond retailer Zoya, part of the Tata family.

Q. What led to your association with Zoya?
A. Zoya and I share a fierce pride in India’s rich tradition of jewellery craftsmanship and a passion to showcase its brilliance to the world. Over the last 15 years, Zoya’s name has become synonymous with rare jewels that have exceptional crafting and resonate with meaning. It is a brand I have long admired, and I like the way that every piece tells a story. Zoya celebrates women connecting with their most authentic self .. I think that reflects me in a lot of ways.

Q. Give us some details about the new collection that you have launched ?
A. My Embrace is an autograph collection from Zoya. Its design inspiration comes from the idea of a woman embracing all her hues and just joyfully celebrating herself. It’s very simple in its design, and has great craftsmanship. It’s a signature collection with 26 sleek bangles, pendants, rings and earrings that I’m certain will become a classic.

Q. The collection is titled My Embrace, what does the word ‘embrace’ mean to you ?
A. When I think of the word ‘embrace’, I think about hugging my son or my husband; hugging my parents or my sister… and that comes from love. But sometimes I think the most important thing for you is to love yourself, so you can properly love the people in your life.

Q. How fond are you of good jewellery? When & how did your love for jewellery begin?
A. I have always loved fine jewellery. My mother has a beautiful collection of jewellery, and she enjoys designing jewellery as well. It’s a love that both Rhea and I have inherited.

Q. What is the most treasured piece of jewellery you own?
A. There is a necklace that my father had gifted to my mother on her 50th birthday that she has given to me. That’s very precious because it’s beautiful and because of the story behind it.

Q. Do you remember any jewellery you may have got from your mother or grandmother which are priceless for you?
A. My Nani left me her wedding jewellery. They are old and beautiful pieces that are very precious to me.

Q. What is your style mantra?
A. I think for me style is about self-expression. I like being myself, and don’t believe in dressing for others. If you see anyone who’s been called fashionable, they had individual style.

Q. Do you give style tips to your husband?
A. Anand is way cooler than I am. My style is more classic. I like clothes that are vintage and timeless. He’s the one who’s made street style popular in India. I don’t think we had that culture in mainstream media, before Anand popularised it with Veg-NonVeg. So, I’m the vintage, classic part of the couple!

Q. What’s a piece of advice you’d like to give to women reading this on buying
jewellery?
A. I would advise women to invest in jewellery that has personal meaning and that they will wear often and enjoy. Look for companies that have an excellent reputation.
And I think Zoya is one of those brands, it is a part of the Tatas, which is one of the most respected companies in our country, and you know that it’s an ethical brand.
