Bones, other remains recovered go missing, CBI tells court

Legally SpeakingBones, other remains recovered go missing, CBI tells court

NEW DELHI: In a startling development, the bones and other remains believed to be those of Sheena Bora, recovered by the police in Raigad, Maharashtra, have reportedly gone missing. The prosecution informed a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court conducting the trial that these crucial pieces of evidence are untraceable. Sheena Bora, aged 24 at the time, was allegedly murdered in April 2012, and the case came to light in 2015, implicating her mother Indrani Mukerjea as the prime accused, who is currently out on bail.

The revelation about the missing “remains” emerged during the deposition of a forensic expert from Mumbai’s JJ Hospital in Byculla. This expert had initially examined the bones recovered by the police from the site where Sheena Bora’s burnt body was reportedly buried in 2012. Special public prosecutor CJ Nandode informed the court that despite diligent efforts, the bones and remains of the victim’s body referred to in the expert’s testimony could not be located.

Nandode further stated the prosecution’s intention to proceed with examining the witness without physically presenting the articles, given their untraceable status. Consequently, the CBI court has adjourned the matter to June 27 for further proceedings.

The case revolves around allegations that Indrani Mukerjea, along with her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamwar Rai (who later turned approver), kidnapped Sheena Bora from Bandra on April 24, 2012.

She was allegedly strangled to death in a car and her body disposed of in a forest near Gagode village in Raigad the following day. While the remains were discovered shortly after, the details of Sheena Bora’s murder did not surface until Rai’s arrest in 2015 for another crime, leading to the arrests of Indrani Mukerjea, Sanjeev Khanna, and subsequently, Peter Mukerjea.

The Central Bureau of Investigation took over the case in 2015, alleging that Peter Mukerjea was also involved in the conspiracy due to displeasure over Sheena Bora’s relationship with his son Rahul from a previous marriage. Indrani Mukerjea, arrested in 2015, was granted bail by the Supreme Court in May 2022, while the case continues to unfold amidst ongoing legal complexities and now, the puzzling absence of critical evidence.
