NEW DELHI: In a serious breach of protocol and security, the Karnataka Public Works Department (PWD) has suspended 5 officials for organizing a birthday celebration inside the Karnataka High Court premises.
The incident came to light after it was discovered that CCTV cameras were intentionally switched off to facilitate the unauthorized event.
The officials suspended include First Division Assistant GH Chikkegowda and Assistant Engineers Lavanya, Meena A.T., Naveen, and Amin S. Anandini. As per an official order issued on April 5, they have been suspended pending a departmental inquiry or until further disciplinary decisions are made.

The order stated that switching off the CCTV system without prior permission to host a private celebration was a serious security lapse and reflected a clear dereliction of duty. “Such conduct is not expected from government employees,” it added, recommending disciplinary action.
According to the government order, government buildings, especially those with high-security significance like the High Court, are reserved only for events celebrating important personalities as officially notified. Hosting a private birthday party within the High Court campus was deemed a serious offence.

The incident reportedly occurred in February and came under scrutiny after a complaint was filed in March. Following this, the Chief Engineer (Communication and Building), Shivamogga, conducted a preliminary inquiry into the matter.
