NEW DELHI: Shariful Islam Shehzad, who has been in the news since January for allegedly assaulting actor Saif Ali Khan during a robbery attempt at his Bandra home, has filed a bail application in the Mumbai Sessions Court.
Through his lawyer, Ajay Gawali, Shehzad has pleaded not guilty, asserting that the charges against him are baseless and fabricated. In the bail plea, he argues that the First Information Report was registered without proper grounds. Shehzad also emphasizes his full cooperation with law enforcement and points out that all key evidence is already in the police’s possession, leaving no scope for tampering.
Currently, the case is under review in the Bandra Magistrate Court. However, it’s expected to be transferred to the Sessions Court once the police file the chargesheet. As of now, the chargesheet has not yet been submitted by the Bandra Police.
Alleged Incident
Shehzad stands accused of breaking into Saif Ali Khan’s home on January 16 with the intention of committing theft. The robbery attempt turned violent, resulting in Khan sustaining severe injuries, including damage to his thoracic spine and other parts of his body. The actor was admitted to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent treatment for five days before being discharged on January 21.
Police Investigation & Evidence
In February, the Mumbai Police announced that they had strong evidence linking Shehzad to the crime.
Investigations revealed that he had entered India from Bangladesh and had stayed at various locations in Kolkata before moving to Mumbai.
