Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC), based at Ranchi, Jharkhand, is one of the largest integrated engineering complexes in India. It has complete manufacturing set up, starting from casting and forging, fabrication, machining, assembly and testing — all at one location backed by strong design, engineering and technology team. HEC plays a major role in making India an almost self-reliant nation in the field of engineering goods for steel, mining, railways, power, nuclear, space and defence sectors.
HEC’s association with the Indian defence sector started way back in 1971, when HEC manufactured and supplied Indian Mountain Gun (MK-II) in the shortest possible time, which caused fatal damage to the American made Patten tanks of the Pakistan Army and played a key role in India’s historic win. Since then, HEC has developed multiple equipment, armament parts, critical machine parts and other import substitutes for the Indian defence sector, like Turret casting for T72 Tank, Forging and machining, including trepanning of 105 mm Gun Barrel, Forged Armoured Plate, Cast Armoured plate, Propeller Shaft Assemblies, Stern Gear System for INS Rana, 120 mm, development of Special Steel and Heat treatment Technology for Bulb Bar, and development of Soft Iron for DMRL. The Government of India aims to achieve self-reliance and self-sufficiency in design development and production of equipment, armament parts, critical machine parts and other import substitutes for the Indian defence sector under the “Make in India” initiative.
